Background of the Study

Psychiatric nursing is a demanding profession that requires significant emotional resilience, clinical expertise, and interpersonal skills. In regions like Borno State, where healthcare systems are often strained due to resource limitations and security challenges, psychiatric nurses frequently face excessive workloads. High workloads can lead to burnout, job dissatisfaction, and reduced quality of care, negatively impacting both nurses’ performance and patient outcomes.

Studies have shown that excessive workload is a major contributor to occupational stress, reduced productivity, and errors in psychiatric nursing practice (Adeyemi et al., 2024). In Borno State, where the mental health burden is exacerbated by conflict and displacement, understanding the effects of workload on psychiatric nurses’ performance is crucial for developing policies that promote sustainable mental health care.

Statement of the Problem

The increasing prevalence of mental health issues in Borno State, combined with limited resources, has resulted in heavy workloads for psychiatric nurses. This has raised concerns about the impact of excessive workload on nurses’ performance, including their ability to provide high-quality patient care, maintain professional standards, and ensure patient safety.

Despite its importance, there is limited research on how workload affects the performance of psychiatric nurses in Borno State. Addressing this gap is essential for improving mental health service delivery and ensuring the well-being of nurses.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the workload levels of psychiatric nurses in Borno State.
  2. To evaluate the effects of workload on the performance of psychiatric nurses.
  3. To recommend strategies for optimizing workload management in psychiatric nursing.

Research Questions

  1. What are the workload levels of psychiatric nurses in Borno State?
  2. How does workload affect the performance of psychiatric nurses?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to optimize workload management in psychiatric nursing?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Excessive workload negatively impacts the performance of psychiatric nurses in Borno State.
  2. Workload management strategies improve the performance of psychiatric nurses.
  3. There is a significant relationship between workload levels and patient outcomes in psychiatric nursing.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on psychiatric nurses in selected healthcare facilities in Borno State, examining their workload levels and the impact on their performance. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported workload and performance data, as well as variability in healthcare facility resources.

Definitions of Terms

  • Performance: The effectiveness and efficiency of psychiatric nurses in delivering mental health care services.
